Back yard island |
|
The back yard island, hidden from the street,
has more wild hairs than the front and side gardens. Besides several trees
and shrubs, it's got a windmill (to celebrate my Dutch heritage), a hill (all
extra soil from gardening projects finds its way up there) and lots of tall
sun-loving plantings including Maximillian sunflower, compass plant, cup plant,
big bluestem grass, and giant purple hyssop. Lots of hollyhocks self-seed
on the hill, and fight for space with a rambing Virginia rose. I'd say
right now this is my favorite part of the garden - low on design, high on
attitude!
A view from the back of the island.
Two exuberant late-season bloomers next to each other in the
back of the island: bush clover and missouri goldenrod. |
