I lusted after this plant for years, but kept receiving duds instead of seeds in my exchange attempts. Finally, in a NARGS exchange a few years ago, I got two lots of fat viable seeds (for the pink and white varieties), which promptly germinated. The deeply cut umbrella leaves of this species are even more impressive than those of S. palmata (which has lived in our garden for several years now) – the photos below show a side-by-side comparison of the two species. They don't reach any kind of impressive state until at least their third year of life, but make up for it by being long-lived.

I was enamored of this vignette, showing a forest of newly emerging Syneilesis over a carpet of Phlox stolonifera undergrowth. Late April of 2014 – a year in which the garden is delayed by a week or two by cool conditions.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.
