Oenothera serrulata

Synonym(s) Calylophus serrulatus
Common name shrubby evening primrose; toothed yellow sundrops
Family onagraceae
Life cycle perennial (Z3-9)
Flowers yellow (spring-summer)
Size 6-18"
Light sun
Cultural notes well-drained soil; drought-tolerant

Woody-based perennial from the American prairies with cheerful yellow flowers that stay open all day. Its taproot makes this species difficult to transplant.

We're just trying this plant for the first time this year; it hasn't found a permanent place in our gardens yet. (click here for a full list)

Seed-starting details for this plant

  1. Seed from NARGS '23/'24 exchange. Baggy 70F (13%G, 7-22d) - 70F with light (7%G, 2d)

Online sources suggest stratification or exposure to fluctuating temperatures is helpful for germination. My seeds were simply stored dry&cold for 9 months, then attempted germination at room temperature.
