Magnolia x loebneri 'Leonard Messel'
First specimen, just after planting

Synonym(s) Magnolia kobus var. loebneri
Common name pink star magnolia
Family magnoliaceae
Life cycle shrub/tree (Z5-9)
Flowers white-purple (April)
Size 15-20'

Hybrid between M. kobus and M. stellata 'Rosea'. Blooms already as a small shrub. Slow-growing to 15', or taller as a tree. We couldn't resist it when we saw it in full bloom during an early-April nursery visit. Unfortunately, that first purchase gave up the ghost in the following winter. It wasn't until a few years later that we replaced it with a new specimen, which we planted in the front yard so that we could better enjoy its early-spring bloom.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.
