Flowers red (spring-summer)

detailed seed-starting info below

Descriptions of this species sound interesting: the shrub stays leafless (but thorny) much of the year, producing racemes of its bright red flowers from the tips of its branches after temperatures rise in spring. Leaves turn golden yellow in fall, which is also when the orange seeds reveal themselves. Not generally planted as an ornamental.

Oddly swollen base

We're just trying this plant for the first time this year; it hasn't found a permanent place in our gardens yet. (click here for a full list)
