Elaeagnus pungens

Elaeagnus pungens

Common name thorny olive
Family elaeagnaceae
Life cycle shrub (Z7-9)
Flowers white (fall)
Size 12-15'
Light sun-part shade

Bushy shrub native to China and Japan. In our garden, it is a volunteer, contributed no doubt by visiting birds, and is unlikely to survive my editing beyond a few months of observation to see what it does in our front border. It is recognizable by its silver-dashed glossy green leaves, and puts out a display of fragrant creamy white flower clusters in late fall, followed by reddish-brown fruits that ripen the following spring. It is considered a noxious weed in some U.S. states.

This is a weed in our garden
