Asparagus plumosus

Asparagus plumosus
Just planted
plumosa fern; asparagus fern
Returning nicely after winter, contrasting sharply against the purple oxalis that happens to grow there as well
Common name plumosa fern; asparagus fern
Family asparagaceae
Life cycle perennial (Z9-11)
Flowers white
Size 18-24"
Light part shade
Cultural notes ordinary garden soil (not too dry), on the acidic side

Most commonly grown as a houseplant, this is not a true fern, but named for its finely divided foliage giving it a fern-like appearance. Insignificant white flowers may appear during the growing season. It needs consistent soil moisture and adequate humidity to keep looking its best. Ours survived a freeze down to about 18°F without protection in its first winter in our garden, so perhaps a little hardier than zone 9.

In our garden, this plant grows in the following area: north foundation border
