Abelia x grandiflora

Abelia x grandiflora
'Little Richard'
glossy abelia
First flowers on 'Rose Creek', mid-June
Common name glossy abelia
Family caprifoliaceae
Life cycle shrub (Z5-9)
Flowers lime green (summer)
Size 3'
Light sun-part shade
Cultural notes medium well-drained soil

Popular deciduous shrub with glossy leaves, often also providing a show of fall color. In our Pennsylvania garden, I tried 'Little Richard', a small cultivar that grows only about half as tall as the original hybrids – but I didn't record anything beyond its original planting, so I figure it didn't fair so well, even though it should have been winter-hardy in our zone 6 garden (with some stems may dieback expected in cold winters). Ten years laters, I tried again in our Houston garden, this time with cultivar 'Rose Creek'. So far, it has at least survived its first winter, and looks quite happy, its first flowers arriving in mid-June.
