This was one of the first penstemons we brought into our garden, and still one of our favorites. The dark-green foliage really does resemble that of coniferous evergreens, and contrasts nicely with the lipstick-red narrow tubular flowers that appear from May onward. It creeps just enough to propagate new plants once in a while - a tendency we've gratefully taken advantage of.

| | Evergreen foliage is still nice in winter, although it tends to catch flying tree leaves. |
