One of the shrubby clematis species. Compared to the tube clematis we also grow, this one has more of a lax habit - at least so far in our garden. I'm was very charmed with them from the first time I saw them bloom. The buds are held upright, but once opened, the flowers look at their toes. They are a very clear blue, with some petal texture to make them appear two-toned. Now that a few years have passed, the plants have established themselves nicely in the few garden areas where they live, growing into bushy fountains that mix nicely with neighboring perennials and shrubs – in the photo at right, they do their thing with Deutzia 'Peek-a-Boo'.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.

  10. Seed from '12 garden, cold-stored. Baggy 70F (3w) - 35F (6w) - 70F (63G, 5-7w)

I haven't done a side by side test, but both years that I added a week with some extra heat to the baggy rotation yielded good germination results. On the other hand, maybe they just need a lot of time.
