    <dd>A method of linking one category to another. Used when the category being 
      linked to could logically be a sub-category of the first. c.f. <a href="#relcat">relcat</a>. 
    <dt><a name="affiliate_site"></a>Affiliate Site
    <dd>A site that lists affiliate links in addition to other content (such as 
      a fan site for a singer that has interviews and photos and links to buy 
      the singer's CDs) might be an acceptable submission to the directory. Sites 
      that consist primarily of links to buy books or CDs, etc. and/or provide 
      no unique content are not appropriate for inclusion in the directory. 
    <dt><a name="affiliate_link"></a>Affiliate Link
    <dd>Affiliate links are links to a commercial site that usually, but not always, 
      include an affiliate or referral ID in the URL, such as AffiliateID=19555&ProductID=508. 
      The person whose ID is in the link gets a commission from anyone who buys 
      from the site after following that link. An example of an affiliate link 
      is: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0060392452/sparkynet . 
    <dt><a name="alphabar"></a>Alphabar
    <dd>Method of subdividing a category by letter. Letters of the alphabet are 
      listed across the top of a category page, and each letter category contains 
      sites beginning with that letter. 
    <dt><a name="altlang"></a>Altlang
    <dd>Abbreviation: ALTernative LANGuage. Internal link pointing to the same 
      category in a different language. The display name of the link is the name 
      of the language to which it is pointing. See also: <a href="/DDP/Categories/Alternative_Language_Links/">Categories: 
      Alternative Language Links</a>. 
    <dt>
    <a name="aol"></a>&lt;AOL&gt;&lt;/AOL&gt; 
    <dd>Colloquial: Used in forum threads to indicate agreement with previous 
      comments. Usage example: &lt;AOL&gt;What t23 said&lt;/AOL&gt;. 
    <dt><a name="b"></a><a name="blarg"></a>Blarg
    <dd>[MIT; now common] The opposite of ping; an exclamation indicating that 
      one has absorbed or is emitting a quantum of unhappiness. 
    <dt><a name="BTW"></a>BTW
    <dd>Acronym: By The Way. Generally used in Internet-based communications. 
      E.g. "BTW, that URL is also listed in World/ ". 
    <dt><a name="c"></a><a name="cat"></a>Cat
    <dd>Colloquial: Shortened form of '<a href="#category">category</a>'. 
    <dt><a name="category"></a>Category
    <dd>A collection of things sharing a common attribute. The way in which sites 
      are arranged within the directory. 
    <dt><a name="categoryfaq"></a>Category FAQ
    <dd>A FAQ for a specific category. See also: <a href="#faq">FAQ</a>. 
    <dt><a name="catdescription"></a>Category description
    <dd>Textual explanation of the topic covered by a category. 
    <dt><a name="catmv"></a>Catmv
    <dd>1 - The process by which a category can be moved to a new location and/or 
      renamed. See also: <a href="/DDP/Interface_and_Features/Catmv/"> Interface_and_Features: 
      Catmv</a>
    <dd>2 - A permission that can be granted to an editor, allowing them to move/rename 
      categories. See also <a href="/DDP/Editors/Types/Editall-Catmv/">Editors: 
      Types: (K)Editall/(K)Catmv</a> 
    <dt><a name="catmod"></a>CatMod
    <dd>Abbreviation: CATegory MODerator An editor who is designated the 'leader' 
      of a specific top-level node, e.g. /Regional. See also: <a href="/DDP/Editors/Types/CatMod/">Editors: 
      Types: CatMod</a>. 
    <dt><a name="child_cat"></a>Child cat
    <dd>Colloquial: child category. Used comparatively to refer to a category 
      contained directly within another category. For example, <a href="http://dmoz.org:8080/Arts/Music/Styles/">Arts/Music/Styles</a> 
      is a child category of <a href="http://dmoz.org:8080/Arts/Music/">Arts/Music</a>.

    <dt><a name="classic_ODP"></a>Classic ODP
    <dd>Colloquial. Encompasses all categories outside of Kids and Teens. See 
      also: <a href="#kidsandteens">Kids and Teens</a>. 
    <dt>Cloaking
    <dd>See: <a href="redirect">Redirect URL</a>. 
    <dt><a name="d"></a><a name="dashboard"></a>Dashboard
    <dd>The main editing interface, containing links to an editor's categories, 
      so he/she can edit them, links to the editor fora, access to logs, etc. 
    <dt><a name="dmoz"></a>DMOZ
    <dd>Acronym: Stands for Directory MOZilla, which used to be the name of the 
      directory when it was accessed via the URL http://directory.mozilla.org 
      . It is now used to refer to the directory as a whole, e.g. "DMOZ is an 
      Internet directory". See also: <a href="#mozilla">Mozilla</a> and <a href="#odp">ODP</a>. 
    <dt><a name="e"></a><a name="editall"></a>Editall
    <dd>An editor allowed to edit in any category in the directory, apart from 
      Kids and Teens and Bookmarks/ . See also: <a href="/DDP/Editors/Types/Editall-Catmv/">Editors: 
      Types: (K)Editall/(K)Catmv</a>. 
    <dt><a name="editor_feedback"></a>Editor Feedback
    <dd>A method of contacting fellow editors, or groups thereof, privately, via 
      e-mail. 
    <dt><a name="editorprofile"></a>Editor profile
    <dd>See: <a href="#profile">Profile</a> 
    <dt><a name="emoticons"></a>Emoticons
    <dd>See: <a href="#smilies">Smilies</a>. 
    <dt><a name="f"></a><a name="faq"></a>FAQ
    <dd>Acronym: Frequently Asked Questions. A list of frequently asked questions 
      and their answers about a given subject. See also <a href="#categoryfaq">Category 
      FAQ</a>. 
    <dt>Feedback
    <dd>See: <a href="#editor_feedback">Editor Feedback</a>. 
    <dt><a name="FTR"></a>FTR
    <dd>Acronym: For The Record. Generally used in Internet-based communications. 
      E.g. "FTR, I'm from New Zealand; <i>not </i>Australia". 
    <dt><a name="FYI"></a>FYI
    <dd>Acronym: For Your Information. E.g. "FYI, I've e-mailed the first draft 
      to your Hotmail address". 
    <dt><a name="fora"></a>Fora
    <dd>Plural of 'forum'. The threaded discussion forum used for editor-editor 
      communication. See also: <a href="/DDP/Communication/Fora/">Communication: 
      Fora</a>. 
    <dt><a name="g"></a><a name="greens"></a>Greens
    <dd>Colloquial: See: <a href="#unreviewed">Unreviewed</a>. 
    <dt><a name="greenbuster"></a>Greenbuster
    <dd>Type of permission which allows editors to concentrate on new submissions. 
      Greenbusters are typically granted larger categories than they would be 
      in normal circumstances. See: <a href="/DDP/Editors/Types/Greenbuster/">Editors: 
      Types: Greenbuster</a>. 
    <dt><a name="GMTA"></a>GMTA
    <dd>Acronym: Great Minds Think Alike. Generally used in Internet-based communications. 
    <dt><a name="k"></a><a name="k_and_t"></a>K&amp;T
    <dd>Colloquial: See: <a href="#kidsandteens">Kids and Teens</a>. 
    <dt><a name="kidsandteens"></a>Kids and Teens
    <dd>Side project of the ODP, with separate guidelines, editors, and metas. 
      It is an Internet directory aimed specifically at audiences aged 18 and 
      under. Also known as 'K&amp;T'.

    <dt><a name="l"></a><a name="leafcategory"></a>Leaf Category/Node
    <dd>Working with the analogy that a category structure can be likened to a 
      tree, with the top-level categories such as Arts/ being the roots of the 
      tree, it follows that categories on the edge of the structure, with no sub-categories, 
      are termed 'leaves', or 'leaf categories'. 
    <dt><a href="link_mine"></a>Link Mine
    <dd>A site which contains a large number of links that can be added directly 
      to ODP. For example, http://www.oultwood.com/ contains hundreds of links 
      to national, regional, and local government sites that can be added to categories 
      in the Regional tree. 
    <dt><a name="LMK"></a>LMK
    <dd>Acronym: Let Me Know. 
    <dt><a name="logs"></a>Logs
    <dd>The vast majority of editing tasks are recorded on logs. These typically 
      contain details such as the type of edit made, when and where the edit was 
      made, and the name of the editor who made the edit. See also: <a href=" /DDP/Interface_and_Features/Category_Logs/"> 
      Interface and Features: Category Logs</a> and <a href=" /DDP/Interface_and_Features/Find_an_Editor/">Interface 
      and Features: Find an Editor</a>. 
    <dt><a name="m"></a><a name="meta"></a>Meta
    <dd>An editor able to edit anywhere, move/rename categories, and approve/reject 
      category applications. See also: <a href="/DDP/Editors/Types/Meta/">Editors: 
      Types: (K)Meta</a> 
    <dt>Mining Links
    <dd>See: <a href="#link_mining">Link Mining</a> 
    <dt><a name="mirror"></a>Mirror Site
    <dd>Mirror sites are sites that contain the same content but are accessed 
      from different URLs. Mirror sites should not be listed in the ODP. Mirror 
      sites are often used a means for spamming the directory. For example, http://www.tofino.info/ 
      and http://www.tofino-bc.com/ are mirror sites, and only one should be listed 
      (if appropriate). 
    <dt><a name="mozzie"></a>Mozzie
    <dd>Images derived from ODP's Mozilla mascot. Used for customising category 
      pages. See also: <a href="#mozilla">Mozilla</a>. 
    <dt><a name="mozilla"></a>Mozilla
    <dd>A green lizard image which Netscape Corp. use as their mascot, as does 
      the ODP. Derivative versions of the image are used on various items of official 
      documentation. See also: <a href="#mozzie">Mozzie</a>. 
    <dt><a name="n"></a><a name="newapp"></a>Newapp
    <dd>Colloquial: NEW APPlication. An editor's application to join the directory. 
    <dt><a name="newperm"></a>Newperm
    <dd>Colloquial: NEW PERMission. An editor's application to add an additional 
      category to their login. 
    <dt><a name="o"></a><a name="odp"></a>ODP
    <dd>Acronym: Open Directory Project. Used to refer to the directory as a whole.

    <dt><a name="odpss"></a>ODPSS
    <dd>Acronym, colloquial: Open Directory Project Suicide Syndrome. Term applied 
      to, ususualy abusive, editors who are rude/insulting in a forum thread that 
      eventually leads to their resignation / firing. 
    <dt><a name="ontology"></a>Ontology
    <dd>The hierarchical structuring of knowledge about things by subcategorising 
      them according to their essential (or at least relevant and/or cognitive) 
      qualities. This is an extension of the previous senses of "ontology" which 
      has become common in discussions about the difficulty of maintaining subject 
      indices. 
    <dt><a name="p"></a><a name="parent_cat"></a>Parent cat
    <dd>Colloquial: parent category. Used comparatively to refer to the category 
      in which a given category is located. For example, the parent category of 
      <a href="http://dmoz.org:8080/Arts/Music/Styles/">Arts/Music/Styles</a> is <a href="http://dmoz.org:8080/Arts/Music/">Arts/Music</a>.

    <dt><a name="profile"></a>Profile
    <dd>A page containing information on a given editor. Includes a list of the 
      categories that they edit, access to editor-specific logs, the ability to 
      send the editor feedback, and an optional area for the editor to display 
      personal information. 
    <dt><a name="r"></a><a name="RDF"></a>RDF
    <dd>Acronym: Resource Description Format. This is the format in which the 
      ODP data is made available for download. Approximately weekly the "RDF dump" 
      is made. This is when new files are generated. During this time editors 
      with catmv abilities are unable to move/rename any categories. 
    <dt><a name="redirect"></a>Redirect URL
    <dd>A URL which either immediately forwards to another URL, or one which contains 
      the contents of another URL in a full-window frame. For example, http://www.welcome.to/Boomers_from_Mars 
      is really http://www.geocities.com/boomers_from_mars/ . 
    <dt><a name="reds"></a>Reds
    <dd>Colloquial: Erroneous <a href="#url">URL</a>s that have been flagged 'red' 
      by <a href="#robozilla">Robozilla</a>. 
    <dt><a name="relcat"></a>Relcat
    <dd>Colloquial: Shortened form of 'related category'. This a method of linking 
      from one category to another, and is used when the category being linked 
      to couldn't logically be a sub-category of the first. c.f. <a href="#atlink">@link</a>. 
    <dt><a name="robozilla"></a>Robozilla
    <dd>Automated link checker that marks erroneous <a href="#url">URL</a>s red. 
    <dt><a name="root"></a>Root
    <dd>See: <a href="#staff">Staff</a>. 
    <dt><a name="s"></a><a name="staff"></a>Staff
    <dd>Official <a href="#odp">ODP</a> employees, who are responsible for the 
      overall running of the directory. See also <a href="/DDP/Editors/Types/Staff/">Editors: 
      Types: Staff/root</a>. 
    <dt><a name="stats"></a>Stats
    <dd>Colloquial: statistics. Refers to the total edits made by a given editor. 
    <dt><a name="smilies"></a>Smilies
    <dd>Graphics that can be used in forum posts to indicate an emotion/expression.

    <dt><a name="subcat"></a>Subcat
    <dd>Colloquial: See: <a href="#subcategory">Subcategory</a>. 
    <dt><a name="subcategory"></a>Subcategory
    <dd>Category contained within another. See: <a href="#category">Category</a>. 
    <dt><a name="seealso"></a>'See also' link
    <dd>See: <a href="#relcat">Relcat</a>. 
    <dt><a name="symlink"></a>Symlink/symbolic link
    <dd>See: <a href="#atlink">@link</a>. 
    <dt><a name="t"></a><a name="taxonomy"></a>Taxonomy
    <dd>1 - The science, laws, or principles of classification; systematics.
    <dd>2 - Division into ordered groups or categories: "Scholars have been laboring 
      to develop a taxonomy of young killers" (Aric Press). 
    <dt><a name="threadstretch"></a>Thread Stretch
    <dd>An extremely long URL forces the width of a forum thread to stretch beyond 
      the width of the monitor. This creates frustration for editors who then 
      need to scroll sideways to read other posts sharing the thread. Placing 
      a space at an approximate mid-point of the URL solves this problem. 
    <dt><a name="toplevelcategory"></a>Top-level category
    <dd>Web sites are classified by grouping similar sites together. The term 
      used to explain this compartmentalisation is categorising. Categories are 
      orgainised in a hierarchy. Thus, top-level categories are those at the top 
      of the hierarchy, for instance /Arts, /Business, /World, etc. 
    <dt><a name="u"></a><a name="unreviewed"></a>Unreviewed
    <dd>Sites that are awaiting review in a category's 'Unreviewed queue'. They 
      have either been submitted by a member of the public, or moved there by 
      another editor. They are not visible to the public. 
    <dt><a name="umbrellacategory"></a>Umbrella Category
    <dd>Put simply, this is a category that contains other categories. Generally 
      the term is applied to an overarching category which contains more specific 
      sub-categories. 
    <dt><a name="url"></a>URL
    <dd>Acronym: Uniform Resource Locator. A standard way of specifying the location 
      of an object, typically a web page, on the Internet. URLs are the form of 
      address used on the World-Wide Web. They are used in HTML documents to specify 
      the target of a hyperlink which is often another HTML document (possibly 
      stored on another computer). For example: http://dmoz.org:8080/ . 
    <dt>Vanity URL
    <dd>See: <a href="#redirect">Redirect URL</a>. 
    <dt><a name="w"></a><a name="world"></a>World
    <dd>A top-level category that contains sites written in languages other than 
      English. For instance, World/Deutsch contains sites written in German.
