Why would I want to?

The more topics the directory covers, the more comprehensive it will be.
If you know that a topic not covered, then consider making a category for
      it.

You only have to include the sites you want to, as opposed to the type
of sites that you sometimes come across in unreviewed.

You have a completely free reign (well, in reason anyway) to structure
      the category how you wish.

A sense of achievement; you've just created the first ever DMOZ category
      for squirrel farming, for instance...

What could I create a category for?

As long as the category doesn't already exist, and you can find relevant
sites to fill it, you're basically limited by your imagination. However if
you're the unimaginative sort, here's some suggestions:

A celebrity - Categories are located within Arts/Celebrities
and must contain a site created by a fan. For further details see the category
    charter.

A musician - Categories are generally located within Arts/Music/Bands_and_Artists
but if the artist has a distinctive an easily identifiable style, you may
wish to place the category within Arts/Music/Styles
. For further details see the Bands
    and Artists category charter.

A criminal - Categories are located in Society/Crime
under the most specific type of crime which the person committed.

A computer game - Categories are located within Games/Video_Games/Genres
    under the most specific genre.

An illness - Categories are generally located in the most specific
    category of Health/Conditions_and_Diseases.

A breed of dog - Categories are located under the relevant group
    in Recreation/Pets/Dogs/Breeds.

A film - Categories are located within Arts/Movies/Titles
    . See the category
    charter for further details.

A book - Categories are generally located under the book's author's
    category in Arts/Literature/Authors
    .

A university or college - Categories are located under the appropriate
    continent category of Reference/Education/Colleges_and_Universities

A locality - Categories are located within the Regional/
hierarchy, under the most appropriate pre-existing category. For more information
    see the Regional Guidelines.

A sport - Depending on the type of sport, it will either be located
directly under Sports, or if it is a
variant of sport that already has a category, it may be located under that.

A painter - Categories are located within Arts/Art_History/Artists.

An album - Categories are located in a Reviews sub-category of the
    artist's category. For example, Arts/Music/Bands_and_Artists/R/Radiohead/Reviews.

How do I make the category?

After you've determined the need for such a category, i.e. it does not
already exist and there are a number of sites to fill it, I suggest that
you make it in your bookmarks. Try to name the category in the same way
similar ones are named, so for example, if the other categories are named
in the form Smith,_John, name yours in the same format. This is not mandatory,
as catmv editors can easily rename the category when they move it into the
main directory, but it's good practice.

Find some sites. For many subjects you can simply use a search engine
like Google, type your query in and away you go. If you are building up
a regional category then using the post/area code as the query text generally
      produces relevant results.

After you've found all the sites that you can via conventional methods,
find out whether any you've already added have links pages. If so, add those
sites to the category as well. If the links page is large, you may wish
      to use the Add
a Page of Links to Unreviewed feature.

Other avenues to explore are webrings, newsgroups, and other web directories.

After you've found all of the links that you can, and you've subdivided
the category if deemed necessary, ensure that all the sites have appropriate
      titles and descriptions.

Add the appropriate relcats, @links, and altlangs (if applicable), and
      write a category description.

If the category you've made is for a very templated category, such as
Arts/Celebrities, then you can simply post in the Rename/Move/Delete/Sort
Request thread in the appropriate top-level forum. So for example if you'd
made a category for a celebrity you'd post in the Arts forum.

If you're unsure as to where the category should be moved to, I suggest
that you start a thread in the appropriate top-level forum. If you can't
even determine the most appropriate top-level category, then start the thread
      in the Ontology forum.
