Vernonia glauca

Vernonia glauca
upland ironweed

Common name upland ironweed
Family asteraceae
Life cycle perennial
Flowers purple (late summer-fall)
Light sun
Cultural notes ordinary garden soil
Seed ripensmid-October

Upright native plant, with lots of purple flowers late in the season. In our garden it doesn't grow nearly as tall as New York ironweed. I transplanted a row of these in their second year, which set them back a bit, but they still bloomed. That year, my camera missed the height of their bloom, hence the lackluster pre-bloom picture at the right. That was several years ago, and I've seen them bloom aplenty since then, witness the photo at top (which shows how the plants tend to flop a bit when they reach full bloom). I grew this from seed labeled as "Vernonia angustifolia", but a friendly visitor to this site pointed out that that plant is supposed to have much narrower leaves than the one pictured here. Meanwhile, in the comment below Kathy points out that my plants resemble V. glauca, so that's what I'll be calling it unless/until I find out otherwise.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.

Seed for this plant is included on my seed trade list
