Sunflower relative, native to mountainous areas in southern and southeastern Europe. Large daisy-like flowers, whose rays and centers are both yellow, appear in late summer. The bold triangular leaves are reportedly aromatic, but I can't say that I've noticed. After a few years in the garden, these plants sure make an impact.

The curious flower buds won't win any beauty contests, but are interesting in their own way

In October, when all that remains is bare stalks, the fuzzy seedheads look positively cute

A few days after they are in full flower, the disks turn a burnished brown color, starting from the outside inward.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.
