Salvia nemorosa

Salvia nemorosa
Our original
meadow sage
Young 'Caradonna'
Salvia nemorosa
'Marcus'

Synonym(s) Salvia sylvestris var. nemorosa
Common name meadow sage
Family lamiaceae
Life cycle perennial (Z4-9)
Flowers blue (May-June)
Size 2'
Light sun
Cultural notes ordinary garden soil

Our original plant was labeled only as "Salvia - Meadow sage". It resembles cultivars such as 'Mainacht' and 'Blue queen' (listed as S. nemorosa, or sometimes S. verticillata or S. x superba). Lots of confusion, but no worries - we just like the plant, whatever it is. I especially love the about-to-bloom blue-black flowerstalks - I'd think they looked foreboding, if I didn't know about the pretty blue flowers that were soon to come.
More recently, I was wowed by the display of the 'Caradonna' cultivar in glorious bloom at Tyler Arboretum, and bought a couple of young plants soon afterwards. They have started to come into their own in our garden, even though they may never grow as magnificently when not pampered by a professional staff. Another recent addition is the compact cultivar 'Marcus', growing to about 12", with flowers in a clearer sky-blue hue.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.
