Rhododendron x azalea Gable hybrid 'Stewartsonian'

Rhododendron x azalea Gable hybrid 'Stewartsonian'
azalea
In mid-autumn, the foliage takes on a patchwork of brilliant colors, tending toward the burgundy

Common name azalea
Family ericaceae
Life cycle evergreen shrub
Flowers red (spring)
Size 2 ft
Light sun-part shade
Cultural notes ordinary garden soil (not too dry)

The only azalea in our garden. We bought one, and promptly lost it in a bad drought. We bought another one, put it in the same spot, and a few years later, another drought nearly did it in - but somehow it scratched itself back from near-death, and now is once again in beautiful bloom. We're glad we didn't just dig it up when it seemed dry and lifeless...

This plant used to grow in our garden, but it slipped away...
