Just about every year, my loot from seed trades and exchanges includes a few varieties of annual poppies. They don't always grow well for us, but we usually have at least one variety to delight us. This year, it's Papaver somniferum var. paeoniflorum 'Black peony', with dark burgundy, almost black, double flowers.

Volunteer seedling, clearly peony-flowered, but not as dark

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.

Seed for this plant is included on my seed trade list
