In its first stint in our garden, fennel self-seeded so prolifically that I weeded it out, assuming there'd be a few survivors to keep the stand going. I must have been very thorough, because fennel did not persist in our garden - until I got some new plants from the HPS/MAG spring sale a few years ago. The smokey appearance of their fine-frilly foliage is marvellous, as is the fragrance – so I'll put up with its free-seeding habits (although I may attempt to staunch that by dead-heading before it goes to seed). It now grows in the back of our herb garden, where it gets to duke it out with other robust perennial herbs.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston. Seed for this plant is included on my seed trade list About my plant portraits
