Codonopsis pilosula

Common name poor man's ginseng
Family campanulaceae
Life cycle perennial (Z6?)
Flowers cream
Size vine to 8'
Light part shade
Cultural notes moist, well-drained soil

Nodding creamy white bellflowers on a vining plant growing from tubers. When handled, the plant has a skunky odor. The cordate leaves are light green and slightly hairy. Used in Chinese traditional medicine.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.

Seed for this plant is included on my seed trade list
