The common name for this sedge derives from its branching structure of its flowering stalks, which appear as little palm trees. We grow a row of them as a dense green low hedge near our patio. The seedheads dry to dark tan in mid-summer.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.
