Large glossy thick leaves, no more than a foot high, are nice through the season. They are evergreen, but by late winter are ratty-looking. I usually forget to prune them off, so that by mid-spring I have a mix of old and new leaves (as in the photo here). By the time it blooms, it's mostly obscured by the peonies rushing upwards in the same area, so I usually happen upon the flowers in a surprise, coming around the corner of a little-used path. A nice surprise, for sure! This year was probably the best display I've seen in the five years or so the plants have been in our garden.

Thanks It's not an uncommon perennial - many sources carry them. Bluestone carries the 'Winterglow' cultivar. Good luck |
- Seed for 'Bergenia mix' from '07 trade. Baggy 70F with light (68%G, 6-22d)
