May 28, 2018. A few thunderstorms and a Texas-size downpour later, the twelve-foot height of the majestic annual is transformed to an equal horizontal extent. Still cheerily blooming up a storm, but I'm afraid it'll have to go sometime soon. But not to worry – thanks to bird seed, there are other sunflowers growing around the garden. |

Justin Ayers | Jan 22, 2019 | All three of my Mexican sunflowers (tithonia) fell over but none of them died. One was taller than the small barn I store my mower in, maybe 12 feet. All I had to do was put them back upright, water them, add a little more soil, and use something to keep them from falling again. I used a metal trellis to hold one up and some concrete pavers for the others. Obviously, it's good to have a more aesthetic solution but this was the first time I grew them and hadn't had trouble with sunflowers toppling over before. Butterflies are crazy about tithonia. Are you sure it was a tithonia? Must have been a mutant – none of my sources quote heights over six feet, and even in their best years, mine haven't topped five feet. Not that the butterflies care :-) |
